چکیده

• The indicator-dilution principle has been applied to studies of the circulation in order to provide estimates of flows and volumes in the vascular compartment. A sine qua non of validity of these estimates is that the indicator used remain within the confines of: the vascular compartment for the entire duration of the period required to obtain appropriate samples of blood. In such a symposium as this, it may appear paradoxical to have a presentation concerned 'with the uses of indicators that do not conform to the requirement just slated. In fact, much of the information available on the flow of blood through the brain, through the liver, and through the kidney has been obtained by the use of such nonconforming indicators. The principles and technics differ to some degree from those used in the single, rapid-injection procedures. To conform to the general pattern of the symposium, no further mention will be made of these other principles and technics. Instead, an endeavor has been made to present some of the results of an extension of the indicator-dilution principles and to indicate wherein these results may have a bearing on the results obtained by the conventional technics in the particular setting of

Indicators and detectors for circulatory dilution studies and their application to organ or region blood-flow determination.

• Increasing application of the indicator-dilution technic to the study of various segments of the circulation has focused attention on the different forms of this teehnic that have been devised" as well as on requirements of the ideal indicator and of the ideal detecting-recording system to be used in such studies. This paper will be largely confined to a discussion of indicators and detectors...

Imaging of flow: basic principles

Indicator dilution techniques for measuring blood flow have existed for more than 100 years. Indicators may be either intravascular, or freely diffusible. Early techniques establishing the mathematical framework for flow (the Fick principle, Kety–Schmidt method, and central volume principle) were mainly based on arterial and venous blood sampling. Tissue perfusion measured by MR techniques may ...

Validation of jugular venous flow as an index of total cerebral blood flow.

Validation of Jugular Venous Flow as an Index of Total Cerebral Blood Flow • Values of total cerebral blood flow in man measured by the indicator dilution method are compared with values of total internal jugular venous flow measured by the thermal dilution method. Except in the case of an extremely labile cerebral hemodynamic state, the results agree within the accuracy of the two methods, sug...

Effect of Correction of Catheter Distortion on Calculated Liver Sinusoidal Volumes.

GORESKY, CARL A., AND MELVIN SILVERMAN. Eject ofcmection of catheter distortion on calculated liver sinusoidal volumes. Am. J. Physiol. 207(a) : 883-892. I 964. -The use of a collecting system to obtain samples in the multiple indicator-dilution technique produces delay in and distortion of the dilution curves. A method for removing these is described and the method is applied, using an analog ...

Detection of changes in lung tissue properties with multiple-indicator dilution.

We evaluated the potential utility of a group of indicators, each of which targets a particular tissue property, as indicators in the multiple-indicator dilution method to detect and to identify abnormalities in lung tissue properties resulting from lung injury models. We measured the pulmonary venous outflow concentration vs. time curves of [14C]diazepam, 3HOH, [14C]phenylethylamine, and a vas...
